Crossing the lines of illustration, comedy, music, art and design, Lizzie works as a freelance illustrator, runs a monthly comedy night and travels Europe as part of her comedy group. She also has been artist-in-residence at festivals and played the Edinburgh Fringe for the last two years in a row.
Where do you take inspiration from, beyond the work of other artists and illustrators?
The colours and compostitions, patterns and shapes of objects, buildings, funiture, clothes and crockery - among other things. I enjoy books and book covers, and objects that deal with text, image and pattern.
Do you keep your style consistent or is it something that is always developing?
On the whole it fits together under a reasonably distinctive style, but it is often developing and changing as I discover new processes and fresh inspirations. I can put my work into about five different stylistic categories. The diversity excites me, but I think I need to be careful I don't come across as confused.
Can you describe your working environment?
Environments include the local library, The Royal Festival Hall on the Southbank, and my dining room table. I have a handy A4-sized screen for screen printing in small places.
My husband (who is an artist) and I are preparing our second bedroom for use as a studio; a process involving painting walls and floors, and the eviction of pigeons from the balcony.
Apart from illustration what do you do?
I work part-time in an arts community centre in East London called Departure. It's a café, second-hand bookshop, gallery, and a community space with a great atmosphere, good coffee and lovely homemade food.
I'm also part of a sketch comedy group called Making Faces. We run a monthly sketch and character comedy night called FACELIFT in Shoreditch, and we are currently getting ready for a run at the Camden Fringe this August [Lizzie also designs Making Faces' publicity materials and website].
