Artist Interview - Josh Hurley

Artist Interview - Josh Hurley

Josh Hurley is an illustrator and screen printer who graduated from Falmouth university in 2012. Since graduating he has been pushing his screen printing further by hanging out with Print Club London last April and has recently co-founded his own design and print studio.

What are you working on at the moment?

Over the last few months I've been building up 'The Key Print House', a design and print studio that I co-founded with my friend Oliver Moinet. We started in October last year selling prints and greeting cards through the Christmas season at local markets. As it went so well we've taken it on full time for the foreseeable future.

With Print House we recently wrapped up a few commissions and have a couple more to get through. We have also just launched our new website, making it a bit more colourful and exciting. We've also been quietly producing some new things for our online shop and getting in contact with some of our shop connections with new stock which will be nice to show everyone. So we've been pretty busy.

Space Cadet

Can you describe how you make images?

It usually starts off as a terrible doodle that turns into a terrible drawing. I then scan this into the computer and build upon it in Photoshop and try to turn it into a credible illustration by rearranging, deleting, rebuilding, repeat. After all this I will usually take it through the screen printing process, something I am particularly fond of.

What is your ideal working environment?

A nice clean, warm studio surrounded by good people, good music, animals and gig posters. I haven't quite got all of these things yet, due to moving around and living in a number of different places over the last few months. I'm working on getting it back in the next few months.

What has 2014 held for you so far?

We've recently moved on to a narrow boat. It's all very exciting and new. It changes the way you normally go about day to day life and we tend to have more adventures with it, its all very fun. With Print House we want to do more markets, new prints and products as well as collaborations with other illustrators.

Also wanting to do more photography based collaborations. (Livi, Rory and Jake I'm looking at you.) On top of all that there will be lots of food and travel adventures with Livi Gosling. So a busy year ahead, I'm hoping this is the year it all comes together.
